Lieutenant Chris Dobyns started his career with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office in February of 2000 as a part time correctional deputy. He was promoted to a full time correctional deputy in August of 2000. In April of 2001, Dobyns was promoted to a full time patrol deputy and worked on 2nd and 3rd shifts. In April of 2007, Dobyns was promoted to patrol sergeant and supervised on both 2nd and 3rd shifts until September of 2016. Dobyns was then promoted to patrol lieutenant, serving as shift commander on all three of the Sheriff’s Office shifts. Dobyns is currently the shift commander for 1st shift overseeing a staff which includes sergeants, patrol, deputies assigned to court security and City-County Government Center security, and a deputy assigned to civil process. Lt. Dobyns is a past member of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Reserve Association and is a current member of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office Benevolent Association.
Lieutenant Dobyns has served on numerous special teams and special team assignments with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office. He has served on the Water Patrol and Rescue Team He currently is the coordinator of this team and the numerous watercraft the Sheriff’s Office is equipped with. Lt. Dobyns has served on the Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Team and is trained in basic crash investigation, technical crash investigation, occupant kinematics, and forensic mapping of crash/crime scenes. He currently is the coordinator of this team. Lt. Dobyns has also served on the Dive Team, to include time as the Assistant Dive Team Leader. He is certified in Basic Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Night and Underwater Navigation, Ice, Dive Rescue, Ice Dive Operations, and Public Safety Dive Team Leadership. He was involved with the Dive Team for 18 years and a past member of the Midwest Public Safety Diver’s Association. Lt. Dobyns has also served on the SWAT Team, to include time as the Assistant SWAT Team Leader. He completed FBI Basic Sniper, FBI Basic SWAT Operator, FTF Hostage Rescue, and NTOA SWAT Command Leadership. He was involved with the SWAT Team for nearly 15 years. Lt. Dobyns also currently serves as the Sheriff’s Office Mobile Field Force Coordinator.
Lt. Dobyns also serves in numerous instructor and trainer capacities with the Sheriff’s Office. He is a certified Handgun and Tactical Rifle Instructor which includes weapon mounted optics. He currently oversees the Sheriff’s Office firearms program and equipment. He is also a certified Tactical Response Instructor. These disciplines are certified by the Wisconsin Department of Training and Standards. Lt. Dobyns is an Active Shooter Incident Management (A.S.I.M.) trainer and a Civilian Response to Active Shooters Events (C.R.A.S.E.) trainer. He also trains Stop The Bleed. He oversees and coordinates training needs and requests regarding A.S.I.M., C.R.A.S.E. and Stop The Bleed.
Lt. Dobyns holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. He has completed leadership trainings relating to instructor development, SWAT Teams and Dive Teams. He has completed Sophia Servant Leadership Development. Lt. Dobyns has also completed the Wisconsin Department of Justice Leadership in Police Organizations course.
