In 2001, The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with the Highway Department obtained a grant to purchase a SMART Unit. SMART (Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer) is a portable unit is used to monitor vehicle speeds in areas throughout the county. The SMART unit records the number of vehicles as well as the speed they are traveling. This data assists the Sheriff’s Office and Highway Department in monitoring voluntary compliance as well as assisting with traffic surveys.
